About Eddie Zacapa
-
Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a way of communicating that allows us to stay connected to compassion and speak and act in a way that is in alignment with our desire to hold our needs and the needs of others with consideration.
It is a process created by Marshall Rosenberg, founder of the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC).
-
The first component involves differentiating between an observation and evaluation and being able to state an observation instead of an evaluation (moralistic judgement, label, diagnosis, etc.). An example is: "I notice (see, hear, etc.) ... that you were 30 minutes late."
The second component involves sharing our feelings without mixing in thoughts. Example:
"I feel frustrated ...."The third step involves sharing your needs by accepting responsibility for your feelings. Example: "... because I need cooperation.
The fourth component involves making a specific action request that will meet your need. Example: "Would you be willing to put the dishes in the dishwasher?"
-
When listening to others, we can apply the four components of nonviolent communication. This often begins with observing what might be triggering an unpleasant feeling in the other person. However, in many cases, we can skip the observation and simply ask, “Are you feeling frustrated because you need more cooperation?”
From there, we can offer a suggestion to help meet that need—for example: “How about we work together to put the dishes away after dinner?”

Life Enriching Communication
Life Enriching Communication (LEC) was founded to help others learn and share Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and to help people navigate conflict effectively. One key focus in NVC is becoming aware of everyone's needs so as to resolve conflict in such a way that all parties needs are valued.
Eddie is a co-founder of LEC and serves as the executive director. He started LEC with the burning desire to help others be able to resolve conflicts in the home, workplace, and other environments. The organization is involved in ending domestic violence, providing parenting classes in El Dorado County and doing prevention work at local schools. If you would like to support the work Eddie is doing with LEC you can make a donation on PayPal here.
Eddie lives in Sacramento, CA. If you are interested in working with Eddie, you can contact him via email at eazacapa@gmail.com or call him at 916-409-0879.

“I am proud to work for Mercy Housing at two of their many properties as a resident services coordinator. I have had the privilege of helping residents at White Rock Village and Trailside Terrace by providing them with programs and resources that can help them meet their personal needs and goals. Whether they need rental assistance, food, help with a resume or just want to give back to their community, I have been available to meet them where they are at so that they can take the next step towards realizing their goal(s).” - Eddie Zacapa
